What a Retaining Wall Costs in Pittsburgh, 2026

The price of a retaining wall depends first on what it is built from. This page walks through the four wall types we build in the South Hills, with the Versa-Lok price table we use. To price a Versa-Lok wall of your own size, use the retaining wall price calculator.

Versa-Lok Block Walls

Versa-Lok interlocking block is our most common material and the best mix of strength, consistency, and affordability. It comes in several colors. The price is for a finished wall, not a pallet of block: compacted stone base, block, pins and caps, drain pipe along the bottom, and clean stone backfill behind it.

Installed price: $80 to $90 per square foot of wall face, $2,500 minimum. Table below, same math as the calculator.

Installed price per square foot of wall face, by height and access
Wall heightEasy accessNormal accessComplicated access
2 ft$80$85$100
3 ft$80$85$100
4 ft$80$85$100
5 ft$80$85$100
6 ft$80$85$100

The per-square-foot rate does not change with height, because height only changes how many square feet of face you are building. Walls of 30 square feet or less add $10 per square foot. Every job has a $2,500 minimum, and walls over 200 square feet are priced per project. Extensive grading adds $2,000, extra fill adds $4,000, and replacing an existing wall adds 5%. Concrete footers, railroad ties, and difficult removals are priced at the site visit.

Natural Stone Walls

Natural stone walls have a rustic, organic look and suit properties with existing stone features or a less formal style. These walls are priced per project after a site visit.

Permits and Engineering

Permit rules are set by each municipality. As one example, Mt. Lebanon's published procedure requires a permit for new, replacement, or relocated retaining walls over 4 feet in height, with two copies of engineered construction drawings bearing a Pennsylvania registered engineer's seal and signature (Mt. Lebanon, Retaining Walls over 4 feet). Other townships have their own rules, so check with yours before breaking ground. Taller walls, and walls near a house, driveway, or patio, generally call for engineering input, and we can tell you during the site visit whether yours does.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a retaining wall cost in Pittsburgh?

+
A Versa-Lok block wall built by Q&A Landscaping starts at $80 to $90 per square foot of wall face, installed, with a $2,500 minimum. Multiply the wall's length by its height to get square feet. Natural stone, boulder, and outcropping walls are priced per project at the site visit. Our retaining wall calculator prices Versa-Lok walls up to 200 square feet, and larger walls are priced per project.

What materials do you use for retaining walls?

+
Our most common material is Versa-Lok interlocking concrete block. We also work with Keystone, Techo-Bloc, and EP Henry block systems, as well as natural stone, fieldstone, and large boulder walls. Every installation includes drainage stone backfill, a compacted gravel base, and geogrid reinforcement where wall height calls for it.

What is the difference between Versa-Lok block, natural stone, and boulder walls?

+
Versa-Lok interlocking block offers the best mix of strength, consistency, and affordability, and it comes in several colors. Natural stone walls have a more rustic, organic look and suit properties with existing stone features or a less formal style. Boulder walls tend to suit steep, informal hillside grades well. We install all three and can help you match the wall style to your property and budget.

Do retaining walls in Pittsburgh require a permit?

+
In many Pittsburgh-area municipalities, retaining walls over about four feet require a building permit, and requirements vary by township. As one example, Mt. Lebanon requires a permit for new or replacement walls over 4 feet, with engineered drawings bearing a Pennsylvania registered engineer's seal. We recommend checking with your local municipality before breaking ground, and we can advise on whether your project crosses that line.

When does a retaining wall need to be engineered?

+
Taller walls, walls near a house, driveway, or patio, and walls holding back unusually saturated or unstable soil generally call for engineering input on reinforcement and setback. Lower walls in typical yard settings usually do not need a stamped engineering plan. We can tell you during the site visit whether your project crosses that line based on height, location, and soil conditions.

How long does retaining wall installation take?

+
Most residential retaining wall projects take between one and four days, depending on the wall's length, height, and site conditions. Larger or tiered wall projects may take one to two weeks. We give you a timeline estimate before any work begins.
