Frequently Asked Questions

How much does sod installation cost in Pittsburgh?

+
Installed sod runs about $6.00 per square foot at 250 square feet or less, $5.00 at 500, $4.50 at 750, $4.00 at 1,000, and $3.00 at 1,500 square feet and up, with the rate sliding in a straight line between those sizes. Prices assume good access and reasonable existing conditions. Removing an old lawn, grading, or extra soil prep is priced at the site visit.

Do I have to remove my old lawn before laying sod?

+
Typically it is best for long term root growth to strip out the existing lawn with a sod cutter or sod remover tool rather than laying sod over it. Q&A removes existing grass and weeds, grades the soil, and adds topsoil if needed. Because old lawn removal depends on the site, it is priced at the site visit and is not in the calculator.

How much topsoil do I need under sod?

+
Most newer construction homes only come with an inch or so of average soil, so it is best to add at least 1 to 2 inches of screened topsoil over the base layer, up to 3 to 4 inches for long term quality. The sod itself carries around an inch of soil. Screened topsoil is $150 per ton in the calculator.

How often do I water new sod?

+
For the first 2 to 3 weeks, keep the sod really wet: at least twice a day, morning and evening, and a third time if it is very hot. Then cut back toward one watering a day. After about a month, water 2 to 3 times a week for longer periods so the roots reach deeper.

When can sod be installed, and how soon can I walk on it?

+
Sod can go down almost year-round when the ground is not frozen, and we typically install through late November to early December, weather permitting. Cooler months need a little less watering than summer. Sod can handle light foot traffic after 2 to 3 weeks once the roots establish.
